Some designs quietly sit ahead of their time

Hello,
Some furniture belongs comfortably to a period. Other designs seem to sit slightly outside the time in which they were made.
This rare bentwood lattice back armchair attributed to Jas Shoolbred & Co. is one of those objects. Dating from the early Edwardian period around 1900–1910, the chair combines Arts & Crafts craftsmanship with a surprisingly architectural silhouette that feels unusually modern for its age.
The pierced lattice back, exposed fixings, curved bentwood frame and restrained use of ornament give the chair a remarkable lightness within a room. After handling several identical surviving examples over recent years, it increasingly appears to be a scarce transitional design that may never have entered full catalogue production.
If you’d like to discuss any of the pieces, or need further details on dimensions, condition or delivery, simply reply to this email and I’ll be happy to help.
