The craftsmanship is hidden on the reverse

Hello -
Sometimes understanding an object means looking at the part that was never intended to be seen. This week's featured arrival is a Vintage Persian Sumak Flatweave Rug, c.1960–1980, its ivory ground arranged with alternating rows of stylised goats and colourful geometric lozenges.
What particularly interested me was the reverse. Turn the rug over and the neat composition gives way to a network of coloured floating supplementary wefts — the result of the traditional wrapped-weft technique that distinguishes Sumak weaving from an ordinary flatweave.
It is a wonderful example of how the construction of an object can be every bit as interesting as its appearance.

Well-preserved vintage Sumak flatweaves with such a clear figurative design are not encountered every day.
A striking Vintage Persian Sumak Flatweave Rug with Stylised Goat and Geometric Motifs, dating from around 1960–1980. Woven using the traditional wrapped-weft Sumak technique, the ivory ground is arranged into orderly compartments filled with colourful stylised goats and geometric lozenges, creating a lively yet balanced composition that celebrates the enduring craftsmanship of handwoven village textiles.

What Makes a Persian Sumak Rug Different? Weaving, Motifs and Textile Art
Most rugs are viewed entirely from the front. With a Sumak, turning it over reveals something quite different — a network of floating coloured wefts that helps explain exactly how the design was made.

What I find particularly fascinating about Sumak weaving is how much of its craftsmanship remains invisible. Turn the rug over and the floating wefts reveal how each colour and motif was built into the design — a quiet reminder of the skill hidden behind something originally made to be lived with.
