An Unexpected Twist on the Tripod Table

|
Hello -
Every so often, a familiar furniture form appears with one detail that makes you look again. This late Victorian mahogany tilt-top table does exactly that.
At first glance, it follows the elegant tradition of the Georgian tripod table, with its oval top, cabriole legs and practical tilting mechanism. Look more closely, however, and the column is far more unusual. Carved open reeds surround a solid central support, creating an almost birdcage-like effect and giving what might otherwise be a relatively restrained piece a surprisingly sculptural quality.
The oval top is another appealing departure from the more commonly encountered circular form, while the original brass snap catch remains in working order.

A refined and unusual late Victorian occasional table, distinguished by its elegant oval top, sculptural open reed column, and classic tilt-top functionality.
A well-proportioned late Victorian mahogany tilt-top table, offering a refined interpretation of earlier Georgian tripod forms. The oval top, finished with a subtle thumbnail moulded edge, provides a softer and more elegant alternative to the more common circular examples, lending the piece a slightly more decorative presence.

Look Beyond the Familiar Form
Why This Victorian Tripod Table Is Different
The tripod table is one of the most recognisable forms in English furniture, but occasionally an example appears that departs from the expected.
This late Victorian table does just that. Its oval tilt-top and cabriole tripod base may be familiar, but the unusual open reed column surrounding the central support gives the piece an entirely different character. In the Journal, we take a closer look at the construction, the influence of earlier Georgian forms, and the small details that make this particular table worth noticing.
