There’s more to this country table than first appears

Hello -
Some of the most interesting furniture reveals itself slowly. This week's arrival is a late 19th century pine cricket table, circa 1880–1900, whose apparently simple three-legged form conceals a remarkably considered piece of traditional country furniture making.
What particularly caught my attention was the construction. Paired hardwood pegs secure the frame, while each splayed leg has an unusual faceted profile with a V-shaped front and softened rear. Even the three-board triangular under-tier has been individually fettled around the angled legs. At 79 cm in diameter and 71 cm high, it is also unusually versatile — substantial enough to make a wonderfully intimate supper table for two.
Good, honest examples retaining this degree of traditional construction and character are increasingly rewarding to find.

Simple in appearance yet remarkably intelligent in its construction, this cricket table demonstrates the practical ingenuity of nineteenth-century country furniture making. From the tapered triangular leg arrangement to the carefully fitted under-tier and pegged mortise-and-tenon frame, every element contributes both structurally and visually, creating a table that has
remained functional and enduring for well over a century.

Why Does Such a Simple Table Work So Well?
Why the 19th Century Pine Cricket Table Endures
Three legs, a circular top and a triangular shelf appear deceptively simple. Look more closely and the cricket table reveals an intelligent relationship between geometry, stability and traditional joinery that has allowed the form to endure for generations.

The more closely I look at old furniture, the more I find that the smallest construction details often tell the most interesting stories. This cricket table is a particularly good example — deceptively simple at first glance, but full of thoughtful decisions once you begin to examine it.
I hope you enjoy discovering it as much as I did.
