There is something particularly appealing about furniture that quietly adapts to the way we live.
This English pine cricket table, dating from around 1880–900, is a lovely example. Its generous circular top, three gently splayed legs and triangular lower shelf create a distinctive silhouette, with the warmth of the pine bringing the whole form together.
What I particularly enjoy is its versatility. At 79 cm across and 71 cm high, it is more than an occasional table. Place it between two chairs for supper, use it in a country kitchen or allow it to become a central feature in a smaller room.
It is a reminder that practical country furniture can also have considerable elegance.
