Made for Chair-Side Reading

This mid-Victorian burr walnut candle stand, dating to circa 1860–1870, becomes easiest to understand when placed beside an armchair. Its proportions bring both candlelight and a small, useful surface within comfortable reach of the reader.
The circular burr-walnut top provides space for a book, correspondence or a glass, while the candlestick is carried independently on a fixed projecting arm. A finely cut barley-twist column supports the upper structure, giving the stand its distinctive vertical rhythm.
Compact in footprint yet strong in presence, it remains particularly well suited to a reading chair, library corner or the end of a sofa. The photograph captures the working upper section precisely as it would have appeared to the person using it.

Object Note Its tall, narrow form brings a practical chair-side surface and a strong vertical accent into very little floor space.

The Journal follows the stand from its fixed candle arm and figured walnut top, down through the barley-twist column to the concealed lead weighting that gives the slender structure its stability.

A Personal Note
For me, its appeal lies in how naturally the candle holder, tabletop and column come together around the simple act of reading.
If you would like to discuss how the stand’s 89 cm height, 32 cm circular top or fixed candle arm might work beside a particular chair or sofa, simply reply to this email. I am always happy to help with dimensions, positioning or further photographs.
